“[People in Groups] learn much about themselves and others which they did not know before.

S.H. Foulkes

As the quote above suggests, Group Psychotherapy is a therapeutic process in which participants have an opportunity of getting to know something of themselves in a way they may not have previously experienced.

Group Therapy places a strong emphasis on interpersonal dynamics within a group setting. It is different to individual psychotherapy insofar as it takes place within a small group of no more than eight people. Individuals within the group have an opportunity to see some of themselves reflected in the behaviours and stories of others.

You might be interested in Group Therapy if you struggle with being in groups or finding your voice in groups, if you feel isolated, stressed or anxious or if you feel as though you are not good enough.

During the ‘assessment for group’ process we will explore your needs and we will decide if group therapy is suitable to meet them. Sometimes it may be more appropriate to spend some time in individual psychotherapy before joining a group in order to work through something that might emerge during that assessment process.

The Group

The Group meets weekly for 1.5 hours where members speak about their own life experience, listen to others do the same and respond to one another in the here and now. It is a powerful and effective method of processing often very difficult and intolerable parts of ourselves and others in a safe and understanding environment. The maximum number of group members is 8 and it is usually a mix of adult women and men who are strangers to one another.

The Group is what is termed a ‘slow open group’ which means that a person may leave the group, in a planned ending and/or a person may join the group, at different times. This means that the dynamic of the Group will change from time to time and it is through the experience of such change that growth and tolerance can be thought about and experienced differently.
